From Brazil where the commercial varities are grown in large fields in full sun. The houseplant varities are smaller but still need some room for their attractive, stiff, spiky leaves. These leaves have sharp edges and are best handled with gloves, especiallyu when re-potting.
Grow in bright but not direct sunlight in warm conditions (not below about 64F (18C) even in the winter and keep out of a draught. They benefit from regular feeding and spraying. In good conditions the fruit will form. It takes some time to mature and after fruiting the plant will die back and can be propogated from off shoots.
The compost should be free draining with a mixture of compost and sand.
