This is a photograph from the exhibition on Penjing gardens that the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco is to stage at the end of April. These are elaborate miniature plant landscapes created on trays and in containers, dating back more than 2000 years and is the origin of Japan's bonsai tradition. Greatly influenced by the principles of Daoism and specifically the two opposing, but complementary forces of Yin and Yang, the scenes are a study in contrasts designed to capture the very essence and spirit of nature.
